cali or bust
this past weekend we went to celebrate a friend's wedding in california. we loaded up our gear and baby (and all the gear that he needs!) and headed out to the airport for our 4 hour flight.
Nik and I have traveled a bit, and now, having flown 3 times with Wes, going through security is no big thing. Nik enjoys the challenge of a new airport/location and figuring out where we need to go, and I adore the prep work of packing, setting up the airline tickets, rental car etc....so combine that with a easy baby who doesn't cry on planes and together we really do make a great traveling team.
So although flying isn't my favorite (I don't know, something about the up and down part and the fact that an airplane is so big and heavy and probably a bit of a control factor) having Nik there to hold my hand and a baby to bounce definitely makes the plane ride go by much faster... and so before we know it, we had arrived in Cali!
Just walking outside to a beautiful day made the trip so worth it...feeling the warmth of the sun and then a refreshing cool ocean breeze allowed us to feel the summer heat without melting or drowning in the humidity...a first for us this summer.
We rolled the windows down in our sea foam green Ford Focus (oh yes, we ride with style) and turned up the music and just soaked in the palm trees, people watched crazy "stereotypical" Californians, and waited for the first siting of the Pacific Ocean... and man, seeing those waves roll over the rocky sand was incredible.
So many wonderful people and memories filled the weekend, and I felt so blessed to been able to experience all of it.
BUT, there was just something wonderful about the drive back from the airport.....
Picking up Mac and having her in the car (who we missed!) breathing her hot stinky dog breath on Wes who was fussy and ready to go to bed. Pulling into the drive way, me running as quickly into the house as possible so I don't let any cockroaches in (ha, I act like they are hiding out, waiting for a moment to sneak in...) Nik unloading the car, while I got Wes settled.
To then plop on our couch in our own cozy living room, Mac spread out on the shaggy rug chewing on her new toy from Cali, and Wes now in his pj's full and content.
Vacations are the best, but Dorthy really does say it best: "There's no place like home."
