Bangarang!!
play/plā/
Verb: Engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose."
Have you ever seen the movie Hook? If the answer to that is, "No." then you need to netflix it, head to blockbuster (do those still exist?), nearest red box, your local library or whatever you use to watch movies, and watch it. Its a quotable classic, rating 5 out of 5 stars in our house.
In the movie there is a scene where Peter, who is all grown up, is getting reacquainted with the Lost Boys. They surround this grown up disheveled overweight business man with all their chaotic grubbiness. Then he gets a ball square in the face, while one of them shouts, "PLAY." The ball bounces off his face into the hands of another boy who quickly throws it at his gut, repeating the same word: "PLAY."
They want Peter to play the game, but really they want him to act like the Pan they know and love, the Pan who embodies the definition above...
Nik and I were in the car running errands and the conversation fell to how ridiculous we can be at times. (this may have started because Nik had been"car dancing"....) I tried to stand up for us with the reasoning "we can't help it. we play." meaning, when there is a costume party, we dress up. when there is an activity, we participate. when there are kids or dogs around, we play (literally). Then Nik brought up Hook, and the scene where they wanted to play with Peter. It was such a simple request....to stop being grown up and just play. And as much as that can be hard when I have a task in front of me, or something that needs cleaning, or to be put away... its good to stop and play sometimes.
And that really is in our core.
and thus, the motto, and the title to this blog.
***also, for those who are curious, lidumus is Latin for "we play." I needed a creative title for the address that wasn't taken. So Harry (my brother) helped me out. :) Thanks Harry.
