The Importance of Being Batman
Westley has entered the phase of special toys, the ones we can't leave the house without. The toys that go to bed, eat and take baths with us. To my husbands delight, the newest 'peoples' (as Nik called them as a child) is Wes' little batman.
Fisher-Price has come out with these wonderfully small, yet not chokeable sized action figures for most of the comic books characters, Hasbro has a few too, so not name dropping, but you learn that these names are important when searching for something a child cannot live without. I am getting ahead of myself...
We started getting them before Wes could sit up, because Nik loves the toy aisle. I can't blame him, especially since there are so many new and fun toys that have come out in the GI Joe, lego, action figure and playmobil department. So we started collecting a few favorites, and by the time Wes turned one, he had 5 or 6 to chose from. He has gone through phases of different favorites.
For about a week C-3PO was his favorite. Then he went back to liking Mr. Noah (playmobil) and eventually we got him a Buzz Lightyear to go with his Woody.
He has a favorite, the must have. The toy that rarely leaves his hand and if it does its only to shove food in or put his arm through his sleeve. Then he has is second favorite, this is the one that he'll grab with his other hand, or squish together with the first favorite, but doesn't always have to go on car rides, or strolls around the block.
First favorite, since the day my brother Kevin got him, has been Batman. Batman originally was blue, in the old school colors. Wes adored him. And while eating dinner, dropped him and Fred decided to see what the big fuss was... and we found blue bits of plastic all over the carpet. Wes kept looking around for his batman and was pretty frustrated when he couldn't hold him. He just doesn't understand dogs and their need to be bad sometimes. Mr. Rogers got the scolding of a lifetime, and we assumed all was safe, but we were wrong.
The next weekend we were at Target (weird. we hate that store. oh wait....) and found another batman, but he was in his black suit now. The updated batman. Wes didn't seem to care, he was still batman. And held him so tight. All was right in the world.
Until last week.
Nik is at the end of a training cycle. Its called Leader Forge. They are out in the field for 10 days doing all the manly infantry things they have been taught, meanwhile are eaten alive by bugs (Nik literally looked like he had chicken pox) and lose 10+ pounds because of the constant heat/humidity. Its not ranger school, but its still a big deal, especially to the Lieutenants who have been training for the past 15 or so weeks.
So Nik is gone in the middle of no-where-alabama, and takes the car (way easier for him and me) so I am without a car, and a-okay. I have projects, dog-walking and lots of nesting to keep me busy, not to mention my little batman toddler who has started to walk...
walk, yes, hold on to things that matter to him while exploring places he wasn't able to reach before? no. So unfortunately yes, batman was dropped again, and Fred, the sneaky little punk that he can be, decided to taste black batman.
10 minutes later. batman was no longer with us.
Fred was let out, and I almost cried, because Wes saw him and did NOT know what to make of it. He recognized that it was his favorite toy, and yet it wasn't... so confusing for a 1 year old!
I have no way to replace said batman, so I decide to look on ebay and see if I can order one to come to me. I found the ultimate batman collection: Batman's batcave, bat car and bat plane (whatever those are actually called) and 3 different batmans (blue, black AND a spiffy one that flies the plane) all for $25 (or at least that's where the bidding was left. This normally would be closer to $75-$100 all together so I was thrilled! And just smiled thinking of how overwhelmed and excited Wes was going to be. Only 12 hours left till the bidding war was over, and I was on top of it.
Then an hour before the bidding stopped I was emailed that my bidding was canceled.
"Um what?"
yeah. The explaination was vague. Something about not having enough feedbacks or something (I'm sorry I don't bid on ebay all the time, infact I usually just do the "buy now" option, if ever...) so apparently I was punished because of my inexperience and the other bidder won. I was crushed (I hate to lose) but poor Wes was without a batman, yet again!
Before Batman#2 was eaten, batman was his first favorite and Buzz was his second. With batman now out of the picture, Buzz moved to first favorite (yay for buzz) and second favorite has been Mama (playmobil), my ipod (that wasn't okay), Mr. Noah, Dada (playmobil) and then after watching some Toy Story, Woody become the 2nd favorite.
As of today, Nik has finished the hardest parts of leader forge, and now has the paperwork, technical stuff before graduation next week, but we'll have the ability to get a NEW batman this weekend. Until then, Buzz and Woody are a happy duo, joined often by Bullseye... and my ipod (still trying to break the draw, but the kid loves music, so I can't really shake that.)
So until Saturday we try not to talk about Batman or really say the "b-word" although every time Wes picks up Robin, he looks around for wonder boy's partner in crime...
and so yet again, with Batman in town, all will be right in the world... :)
