giving.
so its that time of year, when we get all excited about Christmas and traditions and family and presents and food and decorations. It really is my favorite time of year. I adore traditions and Christmastime is full of them.
I also love presents.
"You know, ho ho ho and mistletoe and presents for pretty girls!"
And though I used to love to get them (we'd be kidding ourselves if I said I still don't...) I really do enjoy the fun of giving. I'm one of those annoying people who start Christmas shopping in the beginning of the year, and store little things away all year as I find them for people. I'm also typically done shopping before or around Thanksgiving. (I know I know... haters gonna hate.) It truly does give me that tingly excitement to find things, and wrap them and then anticipate Christmas and the giddiness of knowing so many fun secrets that will make people happy when they open whats inside.
I identify so well with Buddy the Elf. Its not even funny. Even my love for syrup... just ask Nik.
Adding children to the holiday fun, oh man, it is just that: Fun! Sharing traditions and decorating... Teaching them about the meaning of Christmas, how Jesus was born, how he gave up so much to live his life giving and then gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we could join him in heaven... sure the Wisemen brought some fancy gifts, but the true example of a giver, is Jesus.
There are ridiculous expectations of people during this Christmas season now. All the cheesy commercialism attached to Christmas yadda yadda yadda...BUT we do have a choice to keep it simple:
Mother Teresa says it so well. Give till it hurts. We know what we have, we know what we feel comfortable giving and we know what we can give that makes it hurt. During this season of glitz and tinsel, I'm trying to put down my Pottery Barn catalog (but everything in it is SO FUN) and start focusing on two words: "comfort and joy." (Its my personal theme for December.) To look for ways to make comfort around me, and bring joy to others, even when the giving of myself, hurts.
Being 9 months pregnant and not having my own personal cash tree, it has mega challenges. But the simplicity that can be found in this season is part of the beauty.
Charlie Brown Christmas is one of my favorites, and in Linus' sweet lisping words he reminds me what its all about....
...The greatest gift. And then to follow that example to celebrate this season in giving.
