the perfect watch

I adore clocks. I think this is partially because I like to know what time it is, almost all the time. I think it falls in the same OCD category as my hand washing (I can't stand it when my hands are sticky. And not just like I ate a good popsicle sticky, but I will probably be washing them after I type this because of some 'sticky' that my hands touched on this keyboard...its a little ridiculous)

Yes, I enjoy knowing the time. But I also really like the way clocks look. Captain Hook and I could not be friends. I have them all around my house. I love to hear the tick-tocking and find it soothing. I remember an old coo-coo clock my grandparents always had in their upstairs tv room. There was a pull out couch in that room, and sometimes we slept in that room when we'd come to visit them. It had a very loud ticking sound. It was loud enough to hear in the next guest bedroom over. So most nights I could hear it. I remember loving that.

So the other day, I was feeding Wes in the dining room, and from my seat I couldn't see a clock. We have one in the living room and in the kitchen, but from my angle I couldn't find out what time it was. Nik was sitting next to me and glanced at his watch and let me know the time.
I sighed, "We really should get a clock in this room."
He laughed at me, "Or you could just get a watch."

A watch.

Yes. I have had watches over the years. But I never really liked them. I hated the bulky feeling on my wrist and none of them were ever "just right." Similar to my need to constantly know the time, I also have very specific 'must haves' for a watch.

I wasn't fully aware of these needs until last night when I went online looking for my dream watch...

1. I want it to be comfortable. This generally means a cloth or soft-ish leather band. It also means it needs to fit my wrist. I have ridiculously small wrists, like child's size wrists. I don't really want it to rattling or spinning around (like watches have in the past) I want it to be securely on my wrist.
2. I want it to be small. This kind of goes along with the comfort thing, I really don't wear a lot of jewelry, and when I do, its small. So I'd like it to be a smaller face, with a thinner band.
3. A good face. I really like analog watches, a little clock on my wrist. I like numbers on the face, not lines, and I like the numbers to be clear to read but a fun font. Some watches are so serious and almost mean looking with all the straight lines and lack of character. I want a watch with a happy face. Pleasant numbers and I'd even go for a character on the back, not mandatory but acceptable.
4. It HAS to light up. Now I know, its easier to find digital watches that light up, but the light up factor is a must, it almost trumps the analog factor. I want to be able to know what time it is at any time. In dark theaters, in dark cars, whenever. I want to be able to push that button and know the time. And I KNOW they exist, because Robert Langdon's in The Da Vinci Code has a watch that does just that. In fact its a good thing it does light up, it saved his life... a couple of times. [When I told this to Nik he reminded me that The Da Vinci code was a made up story and that means some factors might not  be true. But who could make up such a great watch?? :)]

So four little must haves...you'd think that would be easy to find, but after several hours of online searching I was left frustrated and disappointed. Nik noticed my deflation and decided to help. He listed off some watch brands to look up and then took the laptop himself and tried to find a similar watch to Langdon... fail. And that wasn't because he couldn't find them, but because my pickiness increased.
I like silver, not gold accents.
I don't want a man's watch, it'll be too big.
I don't really care for that face.
I don't want to spend that much money.
It shouldn't have that on the side, that's too bulky... etc.

One site I just scrolled down going "ugly. nope. not happening. gross. why would someone wear that. nope. nope. nope."

Is my knowing exactly what I want getting in the way of me owning a watch? Maybe.
Is it a possibility that my perfect watch doesn't exist? Perhaps.
Am I going to let that discourage me and lower my standards? Absolutely Not.

I ended my search feeling sad. But deciding I would either make a friend who makes watches and he'll build my perfect watch. OR I'll just make it myself. :) Logical, right?

And so the search continues....
