and then there was 5.
Wes is now 5 months old.
Mac is just about a year and a half.
We haven't moved in 6 months. And aren't due to move for at least a year.
Wedding season has pretty much ended. And we have no real big travel plans till Christmas.
...so I guess it felt like life was settling down or something... and it was time for some change.
and so one night while Nik was gone in the field (when I say this, I mean he is literally outside, spending the night in some field or wooded area with the lieutenants he is training) I had some of the lieutenants wives over with their dogs and we went to the dog park around the block. Mackenzie was so happy to have 'friends over.' She played, and then just laid down (and I swear she was smiling) content.
She adores having people and dogs around, and since my little Westley takes up a lot of my time, Mac sometimes needs a bud to play with, or romp outside in the backyard, or just lay on the shaggy carpet with. She needs a doggy-sibling...
I pulled out the ol' laptop and flopped on my bed and typed in the familiar search in "pet finder" (I had done this all when we were looking for our first dog) modifying the search slightly... There were so many dogs, and I was pretty overwhelmed, until I saw this sweet face:
That's him.
I contacted the shelter who had him to schedule a date to meet him and to see how he did with Mac and Wes. He came out of the kennel right to us and it was an instant connection. Mac, who was convinced we were bringing her there to leave her, had freak out dander all over her and wasn't quite sure what to make of this whole experience (but has calmed down significantly since and even licked his ear on the ride home.) When Fred jumped up to gentle kiss Wes on the nose, I knew I wanted to take him home.
They did their very best to care for him, but its hard to give each dog attention. We saw many sad puppies who would have liked to jump in the back of the car with Fred, and it was all that I could do to keep Nik from taking them all home with us. But for now, we know we have helped one little pup by removing him from that hard world of the shelter, into ours...
Our goal is to give him a good bath, fatten him up, get him to respond to his new name: Fred Rogers, (that's Mr. Rogers to you...) and teach Mackenzie to share her toys.
so far...so good!
